Leading with an MTSS Mindset

Honored to work for an Assistant Superintendent who led and leads our management team in the implementation and importance of MTSS; not only has it become a framework for supporting students, it is has become a powerful framework for serving and supporting our school community. I continually look at our school community through three lenses: academic, social-emotional wellness and positive student behavior. Together, our school community has made extensive progress using this framework to provide Tier 1 supports for all students.

A smaller group of colleagues and I developed a Tier 2 process for supporting our students who need additional support in one or more of the areas to ensure they are successful at school.

Approach

  • Academics Intentionally dismantling “silos of excellence” to spread powerful pedagogical practices and creating safe spaces for Teachers to  discuss instruction and most important supporting and encouraging Teachers to lead, while supporting central office initiatives
  • Social Emotional Wellness Collaborating with faculty and staff to offer extensive safe spaces throughout campus, partnering with high-impact community organizations and systematically ensuring all students receive instruction in important social emotional instruction.
  • Positive Student Behavior Student safety must come first. It requires high expectations, consistent follow-through, and support to ensure students understand how to meet expectations—paired with regular recognition and rewards for those who do.
